Most of my trips have taken me to the most far-flung and captivating places. In stark contrast, the images in this series are the result of an 8-day winter hike through one of the most economically impoverished parts of Belgium, the former coal-mining areas of Wallonia. Inspired by the work of Robert Frank and Depardon among others, I had set myself neither theme other than attempting to document the journey itself, recording my impressions and transmitting the lifestyle of the temporary itinerant through my images. No specific sight-seeing to be done, no particular places to visit; for 8 days I travelled for the sheer sake of ‘being on the road’.
